Best German Christmas Markets 2026

Updated: Mar 8

German Christmas Market

Germany is the heart of Christmas market culture, with traditions dating back centuries. For the 2026 season, most markets will follow the traditional Advent calendar, opening in late November and running through December 24th (Heiligabend).

Here are the top German Christmas markets and their scheduled dates for 2026:

German Christmas Markets 2026 - The "Big Three" Classics

Market

2026 Dates

Why It’s Special

Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt

Nov 27 – Dec 24

The most famous in the world; famous for Lebkuchen (gingerbread) and the "City of Wood and Cloth" aesthetic.

Dresden Striezelmarkt

Nov 25 – Dec 24

Germany's oldest market (founded 1434). Home of the giant Christmas pyramid and traditional Stollen cake.

Cologne Cathedral Market

Nov 16 – Dec 23

Set against the backdrop of the massive Gothic cathedral with a sea of red-roofed stalls.

Regional Favorites

  • Munich (Marienplatz): Nov 20 – Dec 24. The quintessential Bavarian experience with alpine music and a huge 30-meter tree.

  • Rothenburg ob der Tauber: Nov 20 – Dec 23. This "Reiterlesmarkt" is set in a perfectly preserved medieval walled town—it looks like a real-life snow globe.

  • Stuttgart: Nov 26 – Dec 23. Known for its rooftop decorations; every stall competes for the title of the "most beautifully decorated roof."

  • Frankfurt: Nov 24 – Dec 22. One of the largest in Germany, stretching from the Main river to the historic Römerberg square.

Unique & "After-Christmas" Markets

  • Berlin (Multiple Locations): Unlike most cities, several Berlin markets (like Breitscheidplatz) stay open until January 3, 2027. The Gendarmenmarkt (often held at Bebelplatz) is considered the most elegant.

  • Ravenna Gorge (Black Forest): Dates are usually weekends only in Advent. It's unique because it is situated directly under the stone arches of a high railway viaduct.

Pro-Tip: In Germany, many markets close early (around 2:00 PM) on December 24th and are completely closed on December 25th. If you plan to visit late in the season, Berlin or Hamburg are your best bets as they often have "Winter Markets" that continue into the New Year.
